The cheapest structural signal you own, and the one most small sites leave entirely unused.

When a crawler reaches your website it has no idea which page matters. Internal links are how you say so. They also tell a model which pages are on the same topic, which matters when it is assembling context for an answer.
The hub and spoke
Pick a topic. Write one comprehensive page — the hub. Write narrower pages that each cover one sub-topic — the spokes. Then:
Every spoke links up to the hub
The hub links down to every spoke
Spokes link sideways to each other where genuinely relevant
This site is built that way: Learn is a hub, this page is a spoke, and the guides reference each other where it helps.
Anchor text is the label
The linked words tell the crawler what the destination is about. Use the actual topic.
Strong: "Wrap them in FAQ schema so each pair can be lifted."
Vary the phrasing naturally. Identical anchor text on forty links reads as manipulation.
Practical rules
Three to eight internal links per page. Enough to establish context, not so many that the page becomes a directory.
Link from the body, not just the nav. Navigation links appear on every page and carry little information. A link inside a sentence is a genuine editorial signal.
Link to depth, not just home. Everything already links to your homepage.
Fix orphans. A page reachable only from the sitemap is a page you have told the crawler nothing about.
Keep URLs stable. If you must move a page, 301 redirect it. Broken internal links are a quality signal, and a bad one.
FIND YOUR ORPHANS
Crawl your website and compare the crawled URL list against your sitemap. Anything in the sitemap that the crawl never reached is orphaned.
Why this helps AI specifically
Retrieval often surfaces one page. Grounding may then follow context. A well-linked cluster means the assistant that found your FAQ can also see your pricing page and your about page — which is exactly the corroboration it needs before naming you.
