The five rules

1. Absolute URLs. The reader may have no idea what domain the file came from.
2. Describe, do not sell. After the colon, say what is on the page. Adjectives are wasted here.
3. Put a constraint in the summary. "For crews under ten" is useful. "Innovative solutions" is not.
4. ## Optional goes last. By convention a reader under a size limit skips that section.
5. Keep it true. A file listing pages that 404 is worse than no file at all.

Where it goes

The root of your domain: yoursite.com/llms.txt. It must return 200 and text/plain.

• Static site / Astro / Next.js: put it in public/.
• Azure Static Web Apps: repo root, and make sure staticwebapp.config.json has no navigationFallback that would swallow it.
• WordPress: see the rewrite rule in the WordPress guide.
• Shopify, Wix, Squarespace: not directly possible. Skip it and spend the time on schema instead.

Check it worked

Open yoursite.com/llms.txt in a browser. If you see plain text, you are done. If you see your homepage, an SPA fallback rule is intercepting it. If it downloads a file, the content type is wrong.

Common questions

Do I need llms.txt if I already have a sitemap?

They do different jobs. A sitemap lists every URL for a crawler. llms.txt explains in prose what the site is about and which handful of pages matter most.

How long should llms.txt be?

Short. Ten to thirty links for most sites. It is a map, not a copy of your website.
